free from three in tennessee

I’m back from an amazing #freefromthree weekend in Nashville and catching up on last week. Rosh Hashanah afforded me the day at home with the kids which is really nice after the time away.

I may have mentioned this but we’ve been struggling a bit with transitions, especially Steven. Last Monday, he had a really hard time when I left for work. There were lots and lots of tears. As always, it didn’t take long for him to recover once I left but it was a Monday where we were both in tears when I left for the office.

078 079

The good news on Monday, though, was that it was Steven’s first day of PT so I got to see the kids mid-morning when I joined them for his first appointment. Most of the time Megan will be on her own with all 3 but I think it will be okay. I’m sure there are lots of parents who don’t have child care for siblings while one of their kids is is in therapy.

Reading books before our appointment. (Steven got a glimpse of the camera and you can see his deranged toddler smile.)

090

Now it’s Sammy’s turn for a deranged toddler smile.

089

My little independent reader.

082

You can see from the way he was fidgeting that Steven was nervous at the appointment. It took a while for him to warm up to his PT, Meredith, and it’s still a work in progress. The first day we heard “I don’t want to” over and over again. This appointment was mostly an assessment of where he is. For his age, he scored “below average to poor”. He’s definitely behind but it’s a little hard to know if some of that score was driven by an unwillingness to participate vs actual skills that aren’t yet developed. Meredith says we’ll learn more as she works with him.

087

He was certainly back in full form by bath time!

093

Diaper deliveries mean fun with boxes. It’s getting hard to pull/push them around though. These kids are getting heavy!

095 101 109 113

It appears that school is rubbing off on SSA. Steven took the packing paper from the box and laid it out on the floor. He sat down next to two “friends” and said that it was circle time. Amaya and Sammy took turns joining him and we sang songs together.

110 118

Some mornings I’m not ready for work before I get the kids up so I let them hang out with me while I get ready. This day they also got to visit with Daddy while he showered. Lucky daddy, lol.

143

Amaya and Steven both had fevers this week so Wednesday was a PJ day. I had lots of cuddles and no tears before work.

145
146

On Thursday I had the good fortune of coming home for lunch. I was leaving for Nashville that night and I was very happy to get the extra time with the kiddos.

162 164 169

Lunchtime FaceTime with Nana! Such a treat!

175

We also got in some quality story time before bed (and before I went off to be #freefromthree)!

198
199

Steven, Sammy and Amaya didn’t skip a beat on Friday. Megan arrived early to get them up and ready for school and you can see they were all smiles for their baths!

177 176

Here’s a sample of their Rosh Hashanah artwork from school. Apples and honey for a sweet new year!

201

While I was away, Grandma Sunshine (and Aunt Annette!) came to hold down the fort with Daddy.

211

I arrived home a 7pm on Sunday, just in time to start celebrating Rosh Hashana – wish Shofars for everyone!

Sammy this week!

Just one photo but look at that happy boy!

080

Amaya this week! Sassy girl. 🙂

179 147 130 081

I’ll end this week’s blog with a photo of 50 moms from my triplet tribe. I’m so lucky to have found these women and many, many others who couldn’t join us.

near and far

Monday afternoon I headed to Dallas for work for 3 nights. I think Steven, Sammy and Amaya are at a stage where they’re pretty attached and definitely notice I’m gone. I have a bunch of work travel coming up so I’m hoping they get a little more accustomed to it because it definitely triggers the mom guilt.

They definitely still know how to have fun when I’m gone, though. This area of our house, leading to the garage, is everywhere. It’s a restaurant. It’s a grocery store. It’s the work place. They all seem to have adopted this idea. If they ask me to go to a restaurant with them, or the grocery store, we camp out in this little hallway. It’s pretty funny.

049
050

Daddy’s shoes.

051

Daniel Tiger makes everything better.

058

On Tuesday morning, Jason and Megan took Steven for a neuro consult. It was a routine evaluation that our pedi requested due to Steven’s low muscle tone. Of course our little chatterbox didn’t want to comply with any of the doctor’s requests.

“Lift up your arm.”
“I don’t want to right now.”
“Stick out your tongue.”
“I don’t want to right now.”

Sounds about right.

The neurologist noticed his low tone but it’s terribly concerned that it’s due to an underlying neurological issue. His blood work came back normal and he’ll have an ekg just to be sure his heart muscle works properly. I’d be shocked if anything was abnormal there.

Here he is, being a brave guy at the appointment. He even got his blood draw without flinching. My big kid.

060 061
062

Tuesday night I had my first real phone call with SSA! I called to check in and they all legitimately spoke to me on the phone. Amaya was doing such a good job answering questions that, at first, I thought Megan was playing a trick on me. I’m so glad Megan captured our pictures of these cuties talking to their traveling mama.

073

Wednesday morning we also had time to FaceTime before I left the hotel for the day.

079
089

It was a calm Wednesday for everyone on the home front.

080

Amaya is still working on her smiles.

085
081
084
082
083

A highlight of my trip to Dallas was the chance to see my triplet mom buddy, Carrie, and her kids: Grace, Thomas and Elizabeth. Anyone who reads the blog regularly knows about Grace and her fight against leukemia. She is one tough cookie, and so are her parents and siblings.

094 093

The kids are interacting with each other more and more. They fight like crazy but they are also, finally, starting to play together. There are more hugs and lots of games. The other night before bed Steven asked Sammy what he wanted to eat and Sammy placed his order. Steven returned with pretend food that Sammy was very happy to eat.

Earlier today, Amaya was in the playroom crying. Steven said he was going to check on Amaya and went to her and said, “Amaya, are you crying?” Then Sammy went to check on her and asked, “Amaya, are you sad?” They also love singing together in their room when they should be sleeping.

Here are some Thursday hugs.

109

108

By Thursday evening I was home! There’s nothing like coming home to my kiddos.

107

Megan snapped these photos of the kids at school on Friday. No faces, but you can get a small sense of their play space.

115 116

Steven and Amaya practicing their smiles.

117

118

Amaya was pushing me down. So much fun to push mommy!

126 129

Do you see how Steven sits? It seems so uncomfortable but he sits like this often. Daniel Tiger works many wonders, one of which is helping us with teeth brushing.

136 139

Amaya, on the verge of a meltdown because I wouldn’t let her have milk after she brushed her teeth. I joked and asked if she wanted wine and then Sammy lost it because he wanted wine.

142

Saturday morning was my Moms of Multiples club’s Mom 2 Mom sale. I planned to take Sammy because I thought he particularly missed me while I was gone but Jason said that Steven also had a tough time. I figured I’d take the boys and leave Amaya home for some Daddy time but she wanted to come, too. So off we went!

But first, story time with Daddy Kitten and some play time at home.

157

Steven was giving Baby Jenna a bath. He said, “her fell down because she wasn’t listening to me.”

149

Steven and Sammy feeding their babies.

152 154 173 174

At the M2M sale, everyone got their own bag to help with the shopping. Last fall I went to a sale with Sammy and it was so tough because he was everywhere and still so little. It’s getting easier!

158

I have to admit this particular instance was easier because we ran into Megan! Yay! Megan on a Saturday! Megan needs to shop for Baby Taco. 🙂

159

After the sale we spent about an hour at the adjacent playground. Much love to Megan for hanging with Steven, Sammy and Amaya on her day off.

172 179

Check this out! It’s perfect for triplets! I was very surprised that SSA figured out how to make it turn on their own. I was sure I’d have to push them around and around and around.

176 177

Steven climbed up this ladder on his own. That’s a big deal for our non-climbers.

181 184

We ended the day with snuggles with daddy.

186 189 191

It was a lazy morning before a Sunday play date. Sammy picked out his outfit today. He insisted on the brown football and leggings. The boy can rock it. And have you ever seen a toddler so chill?

img_0512

Amaya wanted to lie down with Baby Jenna, Monkey Baby and Cow. She made me cover her with Baby Jenna’s blanket and then Steven brought her Baby Jenna’s pillow.

img_0519

Steven is parking his bus in the garage.

img_0521

That block tower behind Amaya is a mailbox that she built.

img_0525

The look on Sammy’s face when he heard we were calling Savta.

img_0523 img_0524

Trouble in paradise: Sammy enters the garage.

img_0526 img_0527

We wrapped up weekend fun with a play date with Cooper, Tucker, and Walker. Steven was happy as a clam but Amaya was fussy, fussy, fussy and Sammy gets very attached to me during play dates. Not my easiest play date!

img_0529 img_0531

Steven starts physical therapy tomorrow and I’m off to Nashville on Thursday night while Grandma Sunshine holds down the fort with Daddy. No blog until Monday. Have a great week!

getting social

Hello! We did a LOT this week. We may have even learned the limits of programming these kiddos. But we had FUN!

Monday was Nana and Savta’s last day visiting so they went to the farm at Kensington Metropark. I think the kids had more fun running around the grounds than actually visiting with animals.

014 023 030 021

Sammy also had one last chance to help Nana cook.

066

That’s Sammy’s “smelling” face.

067

Tuesday was crazy hair day at school for spirit week!

049 051

On Wednesday morning you can still see the remnants of Amaya’s crazy hair. I still needed to shower after the kids got up which is rare, so they entertained themselves in my bathroom while I got ready. (Also rare.) They tried hard to be very helpful.

This was Sammy’s turn to wear mommy’s funny legging.

081 077

Megan took Steven, Sammy and Amaya to the mall play place to meet up with Steffie.

Sammy was watching the “mans” on the escalator.

085
088

SSA were in rare form at the mall, just totally loving on each other. I’m noticing that they’re starting to actually play together instead of just parallel play. They’re more aware of each other than ever and, when they’re not fighting, they show genuine concern for one another. I love it.

090 093
091
092

094

Wednesday, after the mall, Grandma Sunshine came to visit! You can see how happy Sammy was to see her. Big hugs!

096

Thursday was off to a great start with a music morning. We’ve got the makings of a great family music trio.

103 099 123

On Thursday morning I met Megan and Steven at the orthotist. Steven has been wearing his SMOs for 16 months to help with ankle pronation and it doesn’t seem like he’s made much progress. He technically didn’t need to be seen for another 3 months but I didn’t want to wait that long if there’s something else we can be doing. Steven is great about visits to “Mr. Robert” and, as always, was a champ. Robert said that he has a lot of laxity in all of his joints so it’s not just an ankle issue and, as we’ve known since he was itty bitty, he’s a low tone kid. Robert recommended we get him some PT to help with the overall issue so we’re working on that now.

109

Showing Mr. Robert how he walks.

111

Getting checked out.

113 116

Friday night the kids’ pre-school had a back to school picnic/pizza party. It was at 6pm which is a late night out for the kids but we decided to check it out. There was a small shabbat service to kick it off and then pizza! Jason arrived after I did and I had made the mistake of asking SSA if they wanted to eat in the grass or at the table. Of course it wasn’t unanimous. Steven wanted to eat at the table. He waited patiently for 20 minutes until Jason arrived and then made a beeline for a table. These kids don’t forget anything.

Playing before dinner.

143 148

I absolutely love this picture of Steven. You’d never know that, 10 minutes prior, he was absolutely hysterical because Megan wasn’t coming to the pizza party with us.

151

Amaya always has model posture.

146 155

Sammy, on the other hand, has mastered the slouch.

156

Daddy’s here!

161 162

After we ate we made time to play on the playground. It was a late night for the kids but nice to break routine for once.

163

Saturday morning, these cook cats grabbed their instruments and shade for Playroom Pancakes. (No seated breakfast on Saturdays. Just pancakes in the playroom.)

169

Playing with Daddy.

170

We had a morning play date with Liam, Kayla and Mackenzie. It’s so much fun to see how these play dates evolve as our kids get older.

184 181

Saturday afternoon we kept up the pace and went to an Oktoberfest party hosted by a former Borders colleague. On the way there Sammy was talking about the playground that was going to be at the party so I was very relieved to see a swing set. 🙂

198

The hit of the party was the sand box. Or dirt box. Maybe sandy dirt. Steven and Amaya hopped right in and started playing with the trucks.

200

Sammy had a lot more trepidation. I think it was a combination of the dirt/sand and the other kids playing. Fortunately, everyone but our trio abandoned the sand box for the big pinata event which left Steven, Sammy and Amaya alone to rule the roost. Once he got comfortable he loved it.

211 218

Amaya saying hi to a baby.

220 221 222 224

Before it was time to leave the Cline Five played a wild game of “capture”. Lots of running and capturing and lots of laughing.

228 229 231 232

Here I am at the same event back in September 2014 with Ames.

IMG_7087

After so much programming, we had a much needed lazy day at home. Of course no one slept today so bedtime was still a hot mess but SSA were all asleep in 10 minutes which never happens at bedtime.

img_0286-1 img_0322

Steven this week!

He’s showing you the bicycle in the book.

059

Someone needed a nap. These kids have not been napping well lately and it means a lot of late evening melt downs.

056

Steven is still anxious about going to school. He’s fine on the drive there and ok when Megan leaves but the anticipation is tough.

137

Smiling for the camera!

119

Sammy this week!

Pleased with himself because Nana is holding his milk cup for him.

005

Look at this kid.

068

Sammy rocked Amaya’s purple carousel horse shirt.

118

Amaya this week!

Here’s a story as relayed by Megan:
Steven: (crying and yelling)
Amaya: “I didn’t mean too” (as she runs to the other side of the house)
Me: “Amaya, what did you not mean to do?”
Amaya: “Hit Steven”, “I did say sorry already”
Me: “No, you didn’t. Go tell him again”
Amaya: “I can pretend”
Me: “No, you should apologize even if you didn’t mean too. Hitting hurts.”
Amaya: ” Sorry, Steven”

These kids!

004 043

The crossed arms, lol.

071

153

My sassy girl.

117

Have a great week!

tiny humans

Our fun adventure this week is a visit from Nana and Savta! Here they are, ready to leave NY and fly to visit us in Michigan. Love, love, love!

177

They arrived at our house before SSA woke from naps, but the kids knew they were coming. When they went into the room, Sammy said, “Hello Savta!” I wish I had a video of how cute he is saying it. (This morning she went downstairs to get dressed. Sammy heard a noise in the basement and went to the door and said, “Are you okay, Savta?” It was so cute.)

179 180

Saturday morning there was time for some cuddles before we headed out. It was rainy and gross so the plan was to go to the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum. We were about 30 minutes into a normally 30 minute drive when we realized that U of M football traffic was going to make it nearly impossible to get parked downtown in a reasonable amount of time. Instead, we turned around and drove another 30 minutes to the mall.

188 187

Amaya loves this bike. She would play around on it but the minute another kid came by she firmly planted her butt in the seat to stake her claim.

197

All 3 kids spent a long, long riding up and down the escalator with Nana. They took turns over and over and over again.

202

Chinese food in the food court. Our favorite!

214 220

Sammy kept putting duck sauce on his egg roll and licking it off.

221

Twirling noodles.

230

Licking duck sauce off a carrot. Over and over again. The same carrot.

228

In the afternoon, there were lots of cuddles after naps.

004 007

We got busy playing with sand.

014 016

I made cheeseburgers for everyone before Jason and I went out for a date night.

021

Mommy & Daddy getting their drinks on!

023

I have some “funny” LuLaRoe leggings (as the kids call them) and my friend Carrie found one of the designs in a kid’s size. I bought them for Amaya but, this morning, Steven really wanted to wear them. As my other friend Karie said, it’s Bobo in RoeRoe!

027 029

We spent about an hour outside this morning on a long walk. Walks with Savta always include lots of nature exploration.

Checking out a spider web. (Yes, they’re in winter hats. They’re two and a half. This is how we roll.)

041

Another spider web, and the spider was home!

043 046 052

Mommy & Bobes in matching leggings. <3

053 055

Checking out a bug. Savta always finds a bug poking stick if she’s not sure whether or not the bug is alive. Verdict on this one: alive!

066

Nana got a picture of me taking the photo above.

064 068

Amaya decided she didn’t want to walk anymore.

073

I gave in.

079

Here’s a video of Sammy running to Savta. Megan always comments about how she loves the way Sammy runs.

And, for anyone who can’t get enough, here’s the same thing from Nana’s point of view.

After our walk, we took all of the leaves we collected and did a fall craft. I remember ironing leaves between sheets of wax paper back when I was a kid!

086 090 099

The final product!

100

Kicking it back to Labor Day, we had one last day with Grandma Betsy and Grandpa Homey. Such a nice day! It was beautiful out so we filled up the water table and spent about 3 1/2 hours playing outside.

007 013 005 008 011

Catching bubbles.

017 023

Checking out our neighbor washing his car.

025

One final photo to wrap up a great week and a half together! We love you Grandma Betsy and Grandpa Homey! Come back and see us soon!!

020 021

I have so much more time at home with the kids after work now that I’m working so close to home. It’s amazing. We can do things like hang out behind the couch. I guess, when you’re two, that’s a fun adventure!

094 095

A Daniel Tiger selfie.

099

I asked Amaya if she wanted to hold my hand and she said, no, she wanted to hold Sammy’s hand. How sweet it that??

105

I hope they always hold each other’s hands.

108

I’ve been trying to make sandwiches for lunch on workdays and the kids like to help me out. These photos were a surprise on my phone when I was looking at pictures from the week. Thanks Megan!

122 117 125

Sammy and Amaya were also excellent potato washers.

029 027 030

We had a play date with Ben & Sam this week. Can you find all 5 kids?

156 162

Here’s Steven this week!

032 034

Building, building, building!

036 042

Oh, my!

091 136

Sometimes he just lies on the floor.

158

Sammy this week!

Sammy pooped in his sleep one night and the upside of being woken up for a diaper change is snuggles with mommy. Thanks to daddy for catching this moment.

038 039

And, finally, here’s a sample of their weekly school schedule. We get these every week so we can see what the kids are working on.

129 128

Have a great week!

Homey and Bets

This week we’ve been lucky to have Grandpa Homey and Grandma Betsy visiting us! It’s a nice long visit so everyone has been able to settle into a routine together.

Grandpa Homey arrived first on Friday, 8/26. Everyone was so excited to see him and to get busy playing (and reading) together.

010 012 029 032

On Saturday morning we decided to go to Maybury Farm to show Grandpa Homey our animal friends.

Daddy got to work on Steven’s sunblock. He was definitely well protected.

035 042 043
045 048 053

Steven was trying to push Amaya on the little tractor.

061

Sunday was a lazy day at home. Lots of time for rides on Fudgie and reading with Daddy.

100 099 109 105

These are really cool shirts we got from a former Borders colleague who works part time at a local Ann Arbor bookstore. It’s Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel, Caps for Sale and Charlotte’s Web!

114

After the kids went to bed on Sunday night, Grandma Betsy joined us along with Jason’s stepbrother David and his kids, Sullivan and Cecily. On Monday morning, Steven, Sammy and Amaya woke up to their cousins in the house and everyone was ready to play together. We were lucky to have David, Sullivan and Cecily with us until Tuesday morning.

019 022 026

The kids were thrilled to see Grandma Betsy!

068

September 1st starts Childhood Cancer Awareness month and we wore our shirts to support Grace. Did you know that only 4% of all federal funding for cancer research goes to all childhood cancers combined? Very, very few new drugs are developed for kids with cancer and so many lives are lost. It’s not fun and it’s not easy and it needs more attention. Team Cline stands with Grace and all of the other childhood cancer warriors. <3

109

Spreading the word at the zoo. #MoreThan4

112

Sammy has really taken to Grandma Betsy. This morning he stood at the bottom of the stairs and said over and over again, “I’m waiting for you to come downstairs, Betsy. I’m waiting for you to come downstairs, Betsy. I’m waiting for you to come downstairs, Betsy.”

Here they are cooking together.

102 094

Watching family videos on the iPad.

127

The whole gang getting in on the action.

133

I got home from work early on Friday so we took the opportunity to go for a walk in the  neighborhood. It’s always nicer when we have a 1:1 ratio.

Grandpa Homey and Steven were buds.

150

Steven brought Amaya a rock.

152 155

Steven and Grandpa Homey, chilling with diggers.

160

Oh, and a school update! Sammy and Amaya have really taken well to going to school. Amaya hasn’t cried at all and seems very comfortable. Sammy cried a bit again at drop off but was fine before Megan even left the room. Steven is having a tougher time. After pick-up he’s happy and says he had a good time but he’s still crying at home before we leave and for a little while after Megan drops him off. We’re letting him take a stuff animal with him to help with the transition.

Here’s some artwork they did on Tuesday.

142
140
141

Saturday we went to Royal Oak to Arts, Beats & Eats. Sammy spent most of the time walking by Betsy’s side.

183 187

My attempt at a selfie with the kids while they ate lunch.

195

The highlight was a puppet show in the kids area. SSA are definitely at an age where they were able to engage. Steven and Amaya were even laughing along at some points.

202 203

It was a long morning for the kids. We didn’t get home until 3pm which is only 30 minutes before we’re usually done napping. We let them sleep until 4:15pm but only Amaya actually slept. Sammy had napped on the car ride home but Steven hadn’t and he was a hot mess when it was time to get up. These kids definitely still need their naps.

In the evening, the boys got some much needed haircuts. Daddy did a great job!

010 011 030

No haircut for Amaya yet!

019

Today we went to the Michigan State Fair which is held at Suburban Showcase, only 10 minutes from our house.

034

At the Boy Scouts booth we got smores! Amaya ate the whole thing. Sammy at the graham crackers and chocolate. Steven only ate the graham crackers. He did not like how messy the chocolate was. Kind of like the frosting on Megan’s baby reveal cupcakes.

20160904_105424

Outside watching one of the kiddie rides. SSA are holding stuffed animals they got from a state trooper in the Michigan State Police booth.

040

So much to see!

037

There was a little kid ride around a train track and Steven really wanted to go on the “train” so we bought 3 sets of tickets and decided to give it a shot.

045 053

Steven picked the blue car and Amaya picked the pink car. Sammy got a little bit nervous and ended up sitting out this ride but Steven and Amaya jumped right in and had a great time!

IMG_9677 IMG_9676 IMG_9678 101 097

After Sammy saw Steven and Amaya on their ride, he decided he wanted to give it a shot, too! I was so proud of him for trying (and also proud of him for sitting out rather than feeling pressured to do it). My sweet Sam Man.

125 128

It’s been a wonderful, wonderful visit! We can’t wait to see Grandpa Homey and Grandma Betsy again soon!

Steven, Sammy and Amaya are loooooving Magnatiles right now. Here are some photos of their creations.

school days!

Let’s start backwards and with an acknowledgment that chronology is a bit challenged in this post. I spent an amazing time in Iceland with my friend Erica and I’m piecing together a lot of the kids’ time while I was enjoying hot springs, waterfalls and ocean views.

The big deal this week was our FIRST day of school!! Steven, Sammy and Amaya started a 2 morning/week pre-school program at the JCC of West Bloomfield. Jason and I went to a meet the teacher night before I left and Miss Penny and Miss Lena seem wonderful. They both have a ton of experience (20 years and 10 years respectively) and have been teaching in this classroom together for 7 years. It’s a program for 2.5 – 3.5 year olds who aren’t potty trained yet. They have all sorts of activities in their room as well as music and cooking class while they’re there. Since it’s a “transition” program for kids learning to potty train, there’s a 1:6 teacher/student ratio instead of the standard 1:8 ratio for kids their age. That gives me extra comfort as they go to a program without us for the first time.

The gang was ready for school!

The first day went as well as can be expected. Sammy and I got back from New York on Thursday night and I was off on Friday so I was able to go with Megan for the first drop off. Sammy cried when Megan and I left but I’m told that he stopped crying fairly quickly. Steven and Amaya were fine when I left but Steven started crying later in the morning. When we went to pick them up, he sobbed in my arms and said he wanted to go home. Sammy cried again when he saw me, too. But they both said they had fun and could talk about the activities they did so I’m reminding myself that this is just part of the transition – for them and for me. Amaya kept to herself and was quiet all morning but she was the only one of the four of us who didn’t cry. I can’t wait to hear about their 2nd day on Tuesday!

Backing it up further, on Friday the 19th, Sammy and I had a big adventure and flew to New York together! While I was in Iceland, Sammy spent the time at Nana and Papa’s house!!

874

Pre-flight Chinese food. Sammy loved the chopsticks. He told me he was going to chop his food with his chop sticks. Makes sense!

850 852 844

Checking out the safety card before our flight. When we took off, Sammy looked down at the ground and said, “That is Michigan down there! Grandma Sunshine is waving to me!”

893

We landed in NY around 9:45pm and Sammy was awake for the whole flight. He had a late, late night and ended up sleeping until 10:15am when I finally woke him. Wow, wow, wow! After this solo trip to NY I’m starting to see that Sammy could sleep much later if he wasn’t on the same schedule as Steven and Amaya. At this age I’m not sure there’s an easy solution to that but I feel pretty confident he’ll be our teenager who’s still asleep at noon on Saturdays.

When Sammy was finally awake, his joy was finding Savta at the house waiting for him. Boy, this kid loves his Savta. He wants to be with her all the time. It’s precious.

913

My flight wasn’t until 9:15pm so we had time to spend the day at the beach together which was awesome.

922

We were able to venture down to the ocean on this trip. Sammy was eager to stand in the water and liked the waves coming in but the return flow of the water was a little strong and made him nervous. Instead, he played in the sand and sent me to fetch him ocean water in a bucket.

937 950

It’s a long, long walk from the cabana to the ocean but Sammy was a trooper and walked the entire way by himself. I was sure I was going to have to carry him for a bit but he persevered.

930

Playing in the water table with Nana.

987

Meanwhile, back in Michigan, Daddy and Grandma Sunshine were holding down the fort with Steven and Amaya.

908

Amaya was busy with her magnatiles. She’s addicted to them, these days, and getting very good at building.

918 920 935 917 919

Erica & I jetted off to Iceland on Saturday night. I had been extremely anxious about how to tell Sammy I was leaving. I mean I was really stewing over it. When it came time to go, I went to find him and he said, “Go away, Mommy. I want to be with Nana.” Go figure! So I told him I was going out and Nana and Papa would take care of him while I was away. He didn’t even blink. According to my mom, the only time he asked about any of us was on Sunday morning. (Though, I do think he’s a bit clingier to me than usual right now and I wonder if the trip is the reason why.)

Sunday was jam packed for Sam Man. After a trip to the grocery store, he got to go to his cousin Dalia’s 4th birthday party.

Steven and Amaya were up to their usual shenanigans at home. They also seemed to easily accept that Mommy and Sammy were in New York (and Mommy was in Iceland…whatever that meant to them). Jason did tell me that the bedtime song every night was about Mommy and Sammy on the airplane.

209 210 211

Tuesday was another beach day for Sammy. I think he really soaked up all of the attention.

And another beach day on Wednesday! Sammy helped Nana spread peanut butter on his bead. Such a big kid.

387

Aunt Sara, Chase and Charlie had a trip to Hershey Park on Wednesday so, before heading to the beach, Sammy stopped by to say his goodbyes to his aunt and cousin.

420 421

Sammy spent the entire day at the beach playing with water, just transferring it from one container to another. All day long, happy as a clam.

422 464 465

You can always count on Sammy to take a nap.

474

Even in the pool, he’s busy with the water.

476 477 478

Back in MI, Steven and Amaya are still having a fun, quiet week. They even got a zoo trip. With 2 kids, it always means more opportunity to walk around at the zoo.

Steven and Amaya also had a trip to Funtastic.

It seems like they didn’t miss a beat while Mommy and Sammy were away for the week.

And Thursday was it! Sammy did some grocery shopping in the morning and then had a visit from Savta and Auntie before his nap. When I woke up, I was home to him and we got ready to fly home to Daddy, Steven and Amaya.

1041 1042

Watching the planes go.

1070

This flight was a huuuuuge milestone for me. I counted up our trips and I’ve done 5 round trip flights with all 3 kids and 9 with just one. That’s 14 RT flights lugging car seats and we’ve finally graduated! This CARES harness gives Sammy extra security in his seat without needing a car seat on the airplane. Freeeeeeedom!!! He looks like such a big boy. On the flight he asked for his car seat twice but, overall, seemed to adapt well. It’s a nice change when flying with one child but will be a total game changer when flying with all three.

1095

I’m so proud of how Sammy adapted for his week away. I’m excited to find opportunities for Steven and Amaya to also have special time at Nana and Papa’s house.

Here are some solo pics of each of the kids from the week prior.

That was a lot. I’m amazed if anyone made it this far but, since this is a record for the Steven, Sammy and Amaya to have when they’re older, I want to capture it all. Grandpa Homey arrived at our house on Friday right after our first day of school but I’ll save his visit for next week’s blog since Grandma Betsy is joining us tonight and we’ll have a full week together.

With a special Happy Birthday to Nana shout out, I’ll leave you with my favorite photos from my trip to Iceland. Endless love to Jason for being such a supportive partner when I said I wanted to take this trip.

Have a great week!

our “family” is expanding

Our cable and internet were out last night so I wasn’t able to publish the blog. It’s become such a Sunday night routine for me that I wasn’t sure what to do with myself.

Have I mentioned that Megan is pregnant? Yes! A baby is coming our way in late December/early January! (Well, Megan’s way. But our way, too.) There have been a lot of conversations in our house about whether Megan is having a man baby or a lady baby. Though, regardless of gender, Amaya has named the baby “Taco” and I am on board with that. This is pretty much as close as I’m going to come to another baby and I am living vicariously through Megan. It’s been so much fun to see the kids react to Megan’s growing belly and what that means. On Friday, Amaya wanted to give Taco hugs and kisses in Megan’s belly. <3

Monday was the day Megan found out the sex of little Taco and, while my mom was still in town, we were all able to meet up for lunch by my office for a gender reveal.

026 023

Megan brought cupcakes and Sammy was very, very happy to dive in and tell us if Taco is a man or lady.

029

Lady baby!! Megan is having a girl!!

031

Sammy devoured his cupcake. It’s quite the big event when I serve cupcakes and especially before lunch. I think he knew it was a moment to take advantage of.

036

Amaya, celebrating Lady Baby Taco.

033 038

And Steven, who not only couldn’t be bothered with his cupcake but wanted to be sure none of the green icing touched anything in his space.

046

He was very pleased with his mac & cheese and broccoli, though. (Note to parents: Chili’s has a great toddler friendly menu. I was really impressed with the options.)

047

We love you, May May!!

On Tuesday, Nana was expected to be back in NY but the Delta computer meltdown meant that we got to keep Nana for an extra night. I know it wasn’t ideal for my mom but I was really glad to get the extra time together. I know Steven, Sammy and Amaya were, too.

062 064 066

Morning storybook time with Megan on Wednesday.

088

I got this caterpillar stuffed animal a while ago and SSA are finally at an age where they get it. Sammy actually did a great job working the button and Amaya was threading fabric through a loop to velcro it closed. I love their little concentration faces.

089

So, on Wednesday I came home for lunch and planned to eat my sandwich. I offered a bite to Amaya which led to a bite for Sammy and then a bite for Steven. Next thing I knew, they were passing around my sandwich and, bite by bite, it was gone. Jason often says the best way to get them to try something is to attempt to eat it yourself. The good news is we’ve now added ham & cheese sandwiches to their lunch rotation.

107

Wednesday afternoon was a trip to Northville for frozen yogurt. Sammy and Amaya loved theirs. Steven was, once again, distracted by the trucks driving by. He’s nothing if not consistent (and doesn’t seem to have much of a sweet tooth).

113

Thursday morning was Crazy Hat Day in the Land of Cheltenham! You’ll notice it involves a lot of trading.

123 130 132 141 148

The weather has been rainy and muggy which calls for trips to the mall play space.

152 155

These days, nighttime in the Land of Cheltenham means Daniel Tiger.

166 168

Friday morning was a play date with Ben and Sam and two other friends. I’m told it was shockingly calm for this many kids.

IMG_8659

In the afternoon, we had a visit from Grandma Sunshine!!

192

Our day ended with some Olympics, DVR’d from the prior night. Here’s Steven letting us know which way the swimmers are swimming and which way they’ll go next. He was running back and forth in front of the tv anticipating each turn around.

204

And here is Steven (and co.) mastering their floor routines. One, two, three, go!

There were big storms on Friday night and the power went out shortly after midnight.  Jason and I both woke up and so did Amaya who was upset that it was so dark in her room. Since I didn’t know when the power would come back on, I took her into bed with me. I think I’ve romanticized sleeping with the kids because the idea was much better than the reality. Aside from randomly waking up in the night, Amaya was wide awake singing from about 3am to 4am.

220

And, of course, once we were up for the day and power was restored I found that I was smart and put emergency lights in their closets. What wasn’t smart was completely forgetting they were there.

221

Sunday we had a play date with Liam, Kayla and Mckenzie and their mom, Bethany. The kids are definitely still more into parallel play than playing together but we were joking that we hope we’re all still getting together through their high school graduation parties.

It’s going to blow their minds that for my entire childhood, Polaroids aside, you couldn’t see a photo until after you took the film to a store to be developed.

IMG_8730

Someone was changing Baby Jenna’s diaper and got a little over enthusiastic with the diaper cream.

094

That’s it for this week! No blog next week because I will be on a girls’ trip to Iceland with my friend Erica! Whoo hoo!

live from novi

On Monday I lived a dream and came home for lunch with Steven, Sammy and Amaya. It’s an amazing bonus of working so close to home. I can get just about 30 minutes with the kids which is more than enough to make it worthwhile. It was so much fun that I also came home on Tuesday and Wednesday.

027

With a little bit of extra time in the mornings, I can put SSA to work before I leave for the day. Cleaning potatoes is a perfect morning activity.

011 013

Happy kids in the bath on Tuesday! The weird thing is that Steven has been totally hit or miss on the bath for the past month. Some days he’s fine and other day’s he’s hysterical about not wanting to swim. We need to figure this out because it’s brutal for everyone when he’s sobbing through his bath.

033

Wednesday was a “pool” day. We brought the water table out, too, at Steven’s request.

029 030 031

I got this new puzzle with an ebook credit from B&N. It’s great for the kids at this age. They’re learning their letters well, and love it, but need us to reinforce or correct them. The puzzle says the name of the letter as the place it so they can practice/play on their own.

039 076

080 083

On Thursday, Megan took Steven, Sammy and Amaya to Funtastic – the place where they had their 2nd birthday party. It was opening later than we expected so the kids were treated to bacon and canned peaches at a Coney Island. Who doesn’t want surprise canned peaches and bacon!?!? They look like such big kids sitting in the booth.

095

The first time we went to Funtastic was for a birthday part in October 2015. 9 months later it’s a world of difference when the kids play here. They’re so much more confident and capable in the play space.

Our excitement this week was a visit from Nana. Yay! Nana hasn’t visited since May, before her back surgery, so everyone was very, very excited.

108

On Friday morning, Nana and Megan took SSA to the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum. It’s still somewhere that’s best to go with 2 adults and their family membership is great because both a caregiver and grandparents are included.

124

Saturday morning, Nana and I took the kids to Maybury Farm. This trip they had a little garden that we were able to explore. SSA saw peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, squash and cucumbers. It’s neat for them to be able to tie the foods they eat to their origins. (Though we don’t yet do the same with the chicken, cows and pigs.)

159 161

Brothers! Most of the time, I think they look nothing alike but this is one of those moments when it’s so obvious to me that Steven and Sammy are related.

163

A trip to Maybury always includes a visit to playground.

Before we went home, we had a snack in the general store courtesy of Nana. Nothing says “I love you” like three little packets of airplane pretzels.

176 177

In the afternoon we spent a bit of time out in the backyard. Steven, Sammy and Amaya love playing ball with Daddy. Sammy, in particular, looooooves to play catch. He gets so excited!

Afterward, it was brunch in downtown Northville and we wandered through a street fair. One huge bonus of changing the kids’ schedule to a later, shorter nap is that we can do so much more together on weekend mornings.

Steven this week!

A quick story about Steven. I was comforting after his bath freak-out and he saw a photo hanging on the wall of two boats in the water with Santorini cliffs in the background. He told me that the “man and the lady aren’t in the boat. They are in the car driving back to their home. We can’t see their car because it’s too far away.” I don’t know where this imagination came from but it’s really incredible.

We have a book called Pizza Friday. It’s about making pizza. Sammy gets a huge kick out of pretending to throw sauce from the book on Nana. He just giggle and giggles!

136

Amaya this week!

Oh, Amaya. Do you see she’s wearing a tutu under her dress and a baby legging on her arm? Her style is all Toddler and I love it.

She’s been spending a lot of time taking care of Baby Jenna lately.

059
058
061

No more legging on her arm but she’s added her science/construction goggles.

074

🙁 Steven wanted to push a button that Amaya was pushing and this was the result. Our poor girl. It was some bite! I thought we were past this phase but apparently we still need to watch out when Steven is pissed.

019
049 089 014

back to basics

It’s amazing how quickly everyone jumped right back into a routine. On Monday morning, I got ready for work and then went to get the kids up. Right away I told them I was going to the workplace that day and they simply accepted it. Though Steven does like to know that you’ll be “right back.”

One of the amazing bonuses of working so close to home is that I have a good hour with the kids before I leave for work. I’m making lunch and eating breakfast during that time so Steven, Sammy and Amaya have taken to eating an earlier breakfast than they had been so they can sit and eat with me. Cereal for everyone!

009 010

There’s even time for a book or two in the morning. Technically, I could shower once Megan arrives but, at least for now, I like getting up earlier so I can spend this time with the kids before I start my work day. It feels like a gift.

027

For Steven, Sammy and Amaya, It was a pretty quiet first half of the week. There was some time outside & a play date with their friends Ben & Sam.

029

Bath babies!

030

On Wednesday, Megan only worked until 3:30pm before heading off for a long weekend away. We were lucky to have Steffie come that afternoon along with Grandma Sunshine who watched the kids on Thursday and Friday.

Morning story time!

046 045

The kids had a great time with Grandma Sunshine! Thursday morning they were even able to get outside for a little while. I think it was definitely a treat for everyone.

057 058 060 073

Steven, Sammy and Amaya loved playing “airplane and helicopter” with Grandma. They’d sit on the ottoman together and pretend to buckle their seat belts. Grandma would either pretend to be an airplane or a helicopter and the kids would go up, up, up in the sky! Steven was particularly into the game and would share all of the things he saw on the ride: people! clouds! wind!k

083 084 087

Sherry was good to me and was sure to send me photos of the kids while I worked.

095 093 094

It’s weird to get into the groove of weekends being weekends again. While I was off, weekends were more work than the weekdays but now I’m back to treasuring this time with the kids.

Daddy, reading Corduroy to three attentive toddlers.

117

We had a Saturday morning play date with my friend Meghan and her kids, Parker and Emerson. Amaya was smitten with Emerson and Parker, though it took until the end of the morning for Amaya to warm up to Parker. Of course they started playing together (a toddler version of “catch”) right as it was time for everyone to go home.

122 124 127 128

I don’t know what the deal is but Steven has been freaking out about baths. It might his time in pools lately. He keeps saying that he doesn’t want to swim in the bath. We need to figure it out because he’s beside himself at bath time. Last night, I had to wash him very, very quickly and then let Amaya and Sammy play in the bath for another half hour. Steven waited patiently, reading books on Poppy’s chair at the entrance to the bathroom.

020 022

It was a humid, overcast morning so we hit up the play area at the mall and then the food court. Steven, Sammy and Amaya are getting so big. I remember when they were the littlest once running around this play area.

067 052 044

Amaya sat in the car for ages. She held her own well when a bigger boy wanted to come and take her spot. It was so interesting to sit back and watch that play out. Eventually, though, I had to go over and cajole her into sharing the car and doing something else.

056 073

Steven took an escalator ride with Daddy.

076

Daddy promised the kids that they could touch the lawnmowers outside Sears before we went home.

080

In preparation for preschool (2 mornings/week starting at the end of August), we’re changing the kids’ schedule a bit. The big change is lunch is an hour later and their nap is shorter now, from 1pm – 3:30pm. Honestly, I think the biggest adjustment will be for the grownups who got accustomed to that 3+ hr nap every day. It’s party to accommodate their school days when they won’t get home for lunch until after 12:30pm and partly because they take a long time to fall asleep at night. I’m hoping that a slightly shorter nap helps them fall asleep faster in the evening.

This weekend was the start of the transition and it went off without a hitch. After today’s nap we were able to get outside for a little while.

Sammy playing with cars.

089 102

106

Steven heard a lawn mower outside and got very nervous about going outdoors. He needed some real coaxing from Daddy. “Mower will not come up on my deck.”

110

Fortunately he rebounded. The power of power tools!

119

The girls.

118

After dinner Steven complained that his back hurt and he needed Daddy’s back brace. These kids.

121

Of course it will never be just one.

122 123

Steven this week! Just one photo of my Bobo.

016

I do have to share a little bit about Steven’s imagination. One morning he picked up this little plastic cup and put a toy basketball on top of it. He told me it was a balloon. (Hot air balloon.) Then he put the football in the cup and said it was a rocket ship. This kid has such an imagination. I just love it.

125 126

Then, today, he was reading a book with Jason and they got to this page with the train. He said to Jason, “Same train in the other book.” He disappeared into the playroom and came back with a new book. He opened it up to a page with the exact same train.

054

mommy goes to work

Well, this is it. 5 months home with Steven, Sammy and Amaya. 22 weeks. What an unexpected gift. Going back to work comes with so many mixed emotions. Leaving my 3 smart, sassy, funny, curious, loving kids is hard, hard, hard but I’m also ready to go back and ready to dive into a new challenge.

It was a busy last week home, for sure. On Monday, we had a final play date with our friend Julie and her boys. We went to a new (to us) park in West Bloomfield, about 25 minutes away.

032 038

Amaya and the Greaves Boys

036

Our first playground time out goes to Sammy for throwing wood chips.

041

Sammy can be challenging in his willfulness when we’re out. He’s most likely to run off and thinks it’s hysterical. At the park, he decided he didn’t want to sit at the picnic tables for lunch. He wanted to sit on the bench. Since it was a safe environment to wait him out, we just let him sit on the bench until he was ready to come sit and eat with us on his own terms.

042

Tuesday, oh Tuesday! I woke up to find that Megan was sick and couldn’t make it to work. We had an appointment at 8:30am for our 2.5 yr well check which meant it was going to be a very rushed morning. On a lazy day I hate dealing with breakfast with the kids so, on a rushed day, it feels that much worse. Rather than deal with it, I decided to get the kids dressed and out to the car for a breakfast trip to Starbucks. It’s down the street from the pediatrician’s office and it seemed like our best shot to get to the appointment on time and still enjoy the morning. Megan and I also had plans to get the kids’ feet measured for fall shoes and I wanted to keep that on the agenda, as well. The plan was Starbucks before 8am, doctor by 8:30am and shoe store by 10am opening. SSA were so well behaved from the minute we left in the morning until we got home.

For transportation I brought my Kinderwagon Hop Duo stroller. Sammy and Amaya rode in the stroller and Steven walked. He did great. Depending on the circumstances he walked freely (on the sidewalk), held onto the stroller (nearing parking lots) or held my hand (crossing streets) and he listed to my instructions every time.

We all had muffins!

It was a great appointment, and my first with all 3 by myself! Here are the 2.5 yr stats:

Steven:
25lbs 6oz (7th percentile) up from 24 lbs (6th percentile) at 2 yrs.
34.5″ (18th percentile) up from 32.5″ (10th percentile) at 2 yrs.

Sammy:
28lbs (28th percentile) up from 26lbs 8oz (33rd percentile) at 2 yrs.
36.2″ (60th percentile) up from 34.5″ (58th percentile) at 2 yrs.

Amaya:
26lbs 2oz (21st percentile) up from 25lbs 6oz (33rd percentile) at 2 yrs.
36″ (65th percentile) up from 34.5″ (72nd percentile) at 2 yrs.

Tongue depressors for everyone!

We got to the shoe store right as it opened. It was a quick in and out trip since we were only getting measured. Their sales don’t start to next week and I also want to shop online for shoes.

We finished our morning out with the rest of our breakfast muffins. Mommy got to sit on the sidewalk.

All of that and we were home by 10:45am!

In the afternoon we got outside and enjoyed the kiddie pool and sprinkler. Amaya took to it immediately. Sammy enjoyed the pool but didn’t spend as much time in the water and was a little more cautious. Steven got in but seemed uncomfortable. He spent more of his afternoon with the sprinkler.

All of a sudden, lawn mowers are making Steven nervous. I’m not sure what’s going on because he loved them but he’s very concerned that they’ll come near him. He heard mowers off behind our property and immediately climbed in my lap for hugs. He stayed there for a while, actually, and it was getting hot so Sammy and Amaya rubbed his back and legs with cool water from the pool and sprinkler. Adorable.

163

There’s a drain in the grass just off our property and the kids love dumping water down it. When it came time to empty the kiddie pool it made for a great game.

Megan needed to take the rest of the week off so I lined up Stephanie to help me out in the mornings for the rest of the week. We took a morning trip to another new-to-us playground. This one is in Northville, just 10 minutes away. It’s fantastic. Most of the playground is a big fort with tons of opportunities for climbing up high. I think this is somewhere we can come for a long time. Much older kids were having a lot of fun with the more advanced activities. The only downside is that there are bad sight lines and multiple exits. I think, for a while longer, we’ll need 2 adults when we visit.

Amaya and Steven both wanted a chance to sit on the big kid swing. This one sits particularly high off the ground.

A young boy named Sam was at the park with his Batman toys and very, very kindly let Steven and Sammy play with them for a bit.

If your kids work up a big enough appetite, they’ll eat an entire dish of green beans before they even sit down at the table.

Wednesday was another pool day. I’m so happy with how well Steven, Sammy and Amaya have done in the backyard without a fence. I’d been so worried they would run off all the time. As long as there are activities to keep them close to the house, they’re happy to stay in our yard.

Don’t get too excited! This was just for trysies as we start to slowly think about potty training. Amaya is starting to show signs of readiness (holding her pee, asking to sit on the potty, not wanting to wear diapers). Plus, their preschool will work on potty training with them. It only makes sense for us to get ourselves organized for this parenting nightmare.

Sammy is wearing his shorts and Steven has his diaper on. The boys weren’t even interested in giving it a real try. Amaya sat there forever and peed the minute I put her diaper back on. Everything I’ve read and heard is that it’s easiest when they’re truly ready so hopefully we can treat them as individuals and follow their own cues as they get closer to ready.

Friday looked to be brutally hot so we went for a quick morning walk with our cereal before heading inside for the day. The excitement on our walk was seeing the garbage truck multiple times along our route. We bumped into some neighbors who were out for a walk and they said they were following us via the trail of cheerios. 🙂

Inspired by another triplet mom, I tried to set up an obstacle course for the Steven, Sammy and Amaya. Climb over one ottoman. Walk across the stools. Climb over the other ottoman.

In the range of skills and interests, gross motor activities are lowest on their list and it was evident by both their disinterest in, and anxiety over, the obstacle course. They loved climbing over the ottomans but were completely uncomfortable stepping from stool to stool on their own. In time!

Everyone did have fun with play doh and kinetic sand.

We had a nice lazy weekend together. On Saturday, Sammy and Jason went to the ball card store together. Sammy really wanted to go to a ball card show like Steven did last week. There was no show this weekend but kids don’t know what they don’t know so it was off to the ball card store instead. Steven wanted an adventure of his own so I took Steven and Amaya to cvs. Big time fun! 😉 Today was Amaya’s turn to go with Jason to the ball card store and then we all met up in Ann Arbor for family brunch at Zingerman’s Roadhouse. That ball card store owner is going to be very happy that Jason has triplets with great memories and a strong sense of fairness.

Notices Amaya’s shoes? She put them on herself on the wrong feet and was determined to leave them that way. Not a battle I was going to fight for a 10 minute trip to the store.

Sammy got to enjoy a special lunch out with Daddy at Noodles & Co. after the ball card store. He picked Bangkok Noodles and then moved on to Jason’s Beef Stroganoff. He looks like such a big kid!
